The grapes for this traditional mix of Furmint and Harslevelu come from various plots of old vines (40-80 years old). The grapes are destemmed and crushed in a basket press, allowing the fruit to shine through. Until bottling, the wine is matured on the lees in old barrels. Furmint adds a high level of acidity to this wine, and the Harslevelu adds a velvety texture as well as honey and floral notes. Bence may have studied winemaking in Germany and Hungary, but Grand Vin de Barnag was only ever intended to be a side project for him. Bence produced the inaugural vintage of Grand Vin de Barnag, a play on the name of the more renowned Grand Vin de Bordeaux from France, in 2017. Bence grows 50% of the fruit he uses in his wines himself using rented vines, and he purchases the remaining 50% from a negociant farmer, whom he considers to be extremely lucky to work with. Bence creates his wines in a cellar that is carved into the limestone bedrock and is located beneath his home. As a result, fermentations go very slowly and typically only finish in the following spring. For Bence, this is a crucial aspect since, in his opinion, it is essential to the growth of structure and aromatics. He always ferments and ages his wines in old oak barrels (he employs a blend of French, Austrian, and Hungarian oak), and the 2020 vintage was the first one without sulphur additions. The palate is wonderfully crisp and precise, showing vibrant mineral notes that lead to a distinctive salty finish. The winemaking is beautifully straightforward: grapes are direct pressed into stainless steel and concrete tanks, where they ferment and age for 7 months before being bottled without fining, filtration, or sulfur additions. True to its name ("The Bath" in French), La Baignade is the perfect companion for cooling down on warm days, offering both simplicity and sophistication in each glass.

Vintage: 2022

Origin: Baden, Germany

Grapes: Pinot Noir

Alcohol: 12.5%

Wasenhaus Spätburgunder 2022 is the gateway drug to German Pinot Noir - a delicious introduction. Partially whole-cluster fermented (30% kept as whole bunches) and aged for 14 months in French oak, it's a wine that whispers sophistication. Imagine a Pinot that starts cool and reserved, then explodes with red cherries, violets, and intriguing herbal notes of juniper and bay leaves. Born from volcanic loess-clay soils in Kaiserstuhl, this wine carries the DNA of winemakers who've cut their teeth in legendary Burgundian cellars. Whole-cluster pressed and fermented in used oak barrels, it spends 18 months developing depth and complexity—first on full lees in barrel, then six months in steel tanks. The result? A wine that's silky, sophisticated, and seriously compelling. Imagine a Pinot Blanc with the gravitas of a fine Burgundy: delicate citrus notes, a stony mineral backbone, and a texture that caresses your palate. It's approachable yet profound, with subtle hints of lemon balm, stone fruit, and a whisper of yeast. Milan Nestarec cooked up this gorgeous red as a cheeky rebellion against the over-complicated winemaking trends that swept through the Czech Republic after 1989. Blending Blaufrankisch, Blauer Portugieser, and Pinot Noir, Nach tells the story of a seriously wild vintage. Early on, the grapes weren’t looking promising, with super high acidity and zero sugar. But then? Boom! Mid-September brought a magical transformation where sunshine saved the entire harvest. The result is a wine that's bursting with juicy blackberry and cassis flavours, with a gorgeous herbal undertone that'll make wine nerds and casual drinkers alike do a happy dance. Bonus points for the nostalgic one-litre bottle that looks like something you'd find in your grandpa's vintage beer collection.
