However, Tokaj can make some fantastic dry wines, as proved by this Tokaji 2020 by Attila Homonna. The grapes for this traditional mix of Furmint and Harslevelu come from various plots of old vines (40-80 years old). The grapes are destemmed and crushed in a basket press, allowing the fruit to shine through. Until bottling, the wine is matured on the lees in old barrels. Furmint adds a high level of acidity to this wine, and the Harslevelu adds a velvety texture as well as honey and floral notes. The volcanic soils on which the grapes were grown contribute to the wine's wonderful minerality. An electric wine, with racy acidity and a touch of extremely well integrated VA this is unlike any Furmint we’ve ever had before.

Young and talented winemaker Bence Szilágyi is headquartered in Barnag, a sleepy town next to Lake Balaton, the biggest lake in Central Europe. Bence may have studied winemaking in Germany and Hungary, but Grand Vin de Barnag was only ever intended to be a side project for him. Bence produced the inaugural vintage of Grand Vin de Barnag, a play on the name of the more renowned Grand Vin de Bordeaux from France, in 2017. Bence grows 50% of the fruit he uses in his wines himself using rented vines, and he purchases the remaining 50% from a negociant farmer, whom he considers to be extremely lucky to work with. Bence creates his wines in a cellar that is carved into the limestone bedrock and is located beneath his home. As a result, fermentations go very slowly and typically only finish in the following spring. For Bence, this is a crucial aspect since, in his opinion, it is essential to the growth of structure and aromatics. He always ferments and ages his wines in old oak barrels (he employs a blend of French, Austrian, and Hungarian oak), and the 2020 vintage was the first one without sulphur additions. The wine was blended shortly after the Furmints fermentation and all bottles were hand disgorged in November/December 2023.

This year Robin is a touch more Orange than 2021's vintage, while being more fun and fruity, but still maintaining the pureness and minerality we've come to love in Annamária's wines.

Vintage: 2022

Origin: Barabas, Hungary

Grapes: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Kekfrankos (Blaufrankisch)

Alcohol: 13%

Liner Notes is one of our favourites from Annamária, a blend of Cab Sav and Kekfrankos this is a lightly sparkling light red Pet Nat. A blend of Grüner, Welschriesling, Devin, and Aurelius, each grape is treated with its own unique process: Welschriesling undergoes a year of skin contact, while Devin is slightly botrytised and aged under flor after pressing. This refined expression opens with zesty citrus notes and a distinctive flinty minerality, while delicate white floral aromas add layers of sophistication. The winemaking approach emphasizes traditional methods: hand-harvested whole bunches are gently pressed in a vertical basket press, with the juice flowing by gravity into Zemplén oak barrels of varying sizes (225l, 300l, and 400l). Here, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation and rests on its lees for 8 months, developing complexity while maintaining its vibrant character. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with zero additional SO2, this masterful interpretation of terroir stands as a unique expression among Morel's recent productions—a testament to finding artistry even in defeat and letting authentic winemaking speak through every sip.

Vintage: 2023

Origin: Vittoria, Sicily, Italy

Grapes: 70% Zibibbo, 30% Albanello

Alcohol: 12.5%

Another gem from Arianna's SP68 range, this time showcasing Sicily's native white grapes in all their exotic glory. Made from a blend of Albanello and Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria), this skin contact white wine is pure liquid sunshine with a serious edge. The bright straw-yellow colour hints at what's to come - an intoxicating nose full of white flowers, chamomile, and white peaches, with those musky, aromatic notes that make Zibibbo so distinctive. But it's on the palate where things get interesting - fresh and mineral-driven with an almost herbaceous quality, yet rich enough to handle that brief skin maceration, which adds just the right amount of grip. You'll find layers of citrus zest, wild fennel, dry spices, and that salty, oceanic character that screams Sicily from every sip. There's even a hint of olive on the finish that ties everything together beautifully. Made biodynamically with wild yeasts and aged in concrete for 8 months, it's unfined and unfiltered - basically as natural and authentic as white wine gets. Perfect with seafood (especially octopus salad), but honestly, this wine is so evocative of Sicily that you might just want to drink it while dreaming of Mediterranean coastlines.

Vintage: 2021

Origin: Rheinhessen, Germany

Grapes: Riesling

Alcohol: 11.5%

This isn't your typical flowery, predictable Riesling – it's wild, electric, and completely bonkers. It's lighter and more focused than previous vintages whilst maintaining real depth – the kind of sparkling that manages to be both serious and joyful, perfect for any occasion that calls for bubbles with character.

Vintage: 2024

Origin: Savoie, France

Grapes: Jacquère

Alcohol: 11%

Silice Blanc is pure Jacquère that serves as a brilliant introduction to this iconic Alpine domaine and the often-overlooked potential of this indigenous variety. Vinified with indigenous yeasts and whole bunches, then aged for nine months in steel tanks to maximise the fruit and mineral character that Jacquère does so well. The silica-rich soils really shine through here, giving the wine its distinctive mineral backbone. On the nose, expect the freshness of citrus and green apple, with hints of white flowers. The palate delivers bright, zesty acidity, balanced by an incredibly delicious richness that coats the mouth. There's a distinct minerality that's almost stony, with subtle hull notes adding intrigue and finesse.
