The French word "Karambolage" means "collision," in the Obermosel, Jonas Dostert uses it to describe a wine he creates from the collision of white and red grapes. This is a rare wine for Dostert in that it does have a touch of skin contact: the Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) received roughly 10 days of very mild skin contact, whilst the Elbling was pressed directly, and the Cuvee is a 50/50 split for 2020. The wine has a stunning hue that reminds us of freshly squeezed peach juice. It has a lot of flavour and is crisp and clean like all of Dostert's wines. It has a gorgeous bouquet with a mild oxidative nose of apple jelly, almond and hazelnut, orange zest, strawberry, rose, and minty herbs. This is a lovely and nuanced wine that veers between being raw and Chablis-like, structured and textured like a small orange wine, and red-fruited like a rosé.
The 2021 vintage sees the wine transform into a skin contact Elbling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Deep in colour and texture but with a pretty, almost delicate characteristic that keeps you coming back for more. Orange zest, nutty, and all together delicious.
