Labet's Macvin is a fascinating fortified wine that sits somewhere between aged Sherry and fine liqueur, made using a traditional Jura method dating back to the 14th century. This bottling blends one-third Marc from 2010 with two-thirds grape juice from 2014, then gets an extended five-year ageing period for exceptional depth. The Marc is distilled by the Labet family in their old iron still from their own harvest, then aged for two years in barrels before blending with unfermented grape juice. The resulting Macvin spends at least 18 months in 228-litre oak barrels, developing that distinctive sweet, oxidative character of dried and stewed fruits with a spice-laden finish. At 17% alcohol, it's concentrated and complex, heading down that oxidative road that makes it so compelling. Serve chilled (8°C) as an aperitif or pair with dark bitter chocolate desserts – this is liquid history from one of Jura's most renowned growers.
