Szürke & Fehér & Kék 2023 by Franz Weninger is a testament to innovative winemaking and the unexpected outcomes of the vineyard. In 1999, Franz set out to plant Pinot Noir in the Frettner vineyard, but a mix-up in his order led to significant amounts of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc being delivered instead. Rather than seeing this as a setback, Franz embraced the opportunity to create a unique blend; Pinot Blanc fermented on skins, whole cluster Pinot Gris, and direct press Pinot Noir juice. The result is a vibrant wine that reflects Sopron’s terroir, offering an orange-wine profile with delicate pink undertones. On the nose, it presents notes of pink grapefruit, mirabelle plum, and a hint of sour cherry, with a light effervescence and a refreshing herbal finish. This wine illustrates how innovation can turn a vineyard mistake into a signature, terroir-driven creation.
