Clos du Roy is consistently among Sylvain's flagship wines and one of the top expressions from the northern Côte de Nuits. From his parcel of over two hectares of mature vines planted in this southeast-facing site's limestone pebbles and clay soils, the 2022 shows a highly attractive floral quality alongside softly spicy, distinctly earthy aromatics featuring dark currant, wild strawberries, and exotic tea with hints of brine. The palate delivers good underlying tension with medium-weight flavours shaped by fine-grained tannins that create a chiselled, sneaky long finish – like rolling tiny pebbles around in your mouth. Hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts before ageing in oak barrels, this decidedly firm effort will need all of a decade to reach its peak but should then drink well for another 20 years. One for serious cellaring – drink from 2030 onwards.
